Clubs and Societies are an important part of Trinity College Dublin’s vibrant student life. They give students the opportunity to make friends and build on their interests and skills. However, students with disabilities are among those who are sometimes excluded from clubs and societies.
This checklist will take you through some different areas of running a club or society. Each question will ask you to think about the efforts that your club or society makes to be inclusive to people with disabilities.
The aim of the checklist is to support you and provide solutions that will improve the accessibility and inclusivity in your club or society. Honest and open answers will allow us all to achieve this outcome! If you feel that your response needs more context, please add additional comments to be reviewed by the Trinity Ability Co_op.
At the end of the checklist, you will receive a report with solutions and a score ranging from 1 to 40, which will place the club or society into one of the following categories:
- First Category = 25-40: This club/society demonstrates clear efforts to be inclusive to students with disabilities. Keep up the good work! Societies who achieve a score in the First Category will receive a digital badge.
- Second Category = 10-24: This club/society has made some effort to be inclusive to students with disabilities but there is still a lot of room for improvement. Check out the report to find out how to improve this score.
- Third Category = 0-9: This club/society has a lot of things to improve to make them inclusive for students with disabilities. However, it is easy to improve this score by implimenting the solutions that can be found in the report.
Taking steps towards being inclusive to people with disabilities in your club or society involves addressing the role that we all have had in excluding disabled students, whether it was intentional or not. While this is uncomfortable, it is necessary so that we can develop and make student life in Trinity more inclusive.

What is Accessibility?
Accessibility encompasses more than just physical access to buildings or the external environment. It is the gateway to full participation in society for people with disabilities. Accessibility involves the adequate fulfilment of human rights such as health care, education, housing, communications and to travel freely. Accessibility is full and equal access to all the responsibilities, benefits, and rights of society.
What is Inclusion?
Inclusion embodies involvement and empowerment, where the inherent worth and dignity of all people are recognised. An inclusive university promotes and sustains a sense of belonging in all aspects of student life. It values and practices respect for the talents, beliefs, and backgrounds of all members.
